Diversity & Inclusion through Student Ambassadors

July 8, 2022

There are many challenges to achieving inclusive programs in higher education, from recruiting and retaining a diverse student population, faculty, and staff to managing diversity in ways that present desired outcomes.

By creating a more inclusive environment, universities today are not only enriching the educational experience for all students, but also preparing them for success in an increasingly globalized world.

The Importance of Diversity and Inclusion in Universities

In today's society, it's important to remember that we all come from different backgrounds and walks of life. We all have different experiences and perspectives to offer, and it's important to value diversity.

When we work together, we can achieve so much more. We can learn from each other, grow as individuals, and build stronger relationships. When we embrace diversity, we make the world a better place for everyone.

Think of all the different worldviews in college students’ daily lives. They come from parents, teachers, and counsellors who help them navigate the social justice coursework they experience. They also come from family members, neighbours, and friends who offer their own perspectives.

Peer influence is one of the most effective sources of innovation for student learning. When students interact with each other, they learn by imitation. The more students interact, the more they learn.

Diversity and Inclusion through Univiser's Student Ambassadorship

We at Univiser believe that diversity is one of our greatest strengths as a nation and as a species. When we come together and embrace our differences, we can achieve so much more

Being a student ambassador can add diversity in a number of ways:

Student ambassadors can help to diversify the campus community by working with underrepresented groups of students. Underrepresented students feel unheard and face social isolation when they join a community that is already made up of students from a majority of countries.

As a student ambassador, one can improve the comfort factor for all prospects by making them feel heard and giving them confidence in enrolling in a respective university regardless of their identity, race or sexual representation.

When students join student ambassadorship at their universities, they can change the environment to make it more inclusive and welcoming for everyone. This opens up opportunities for all students to learn together and be productive in their studies.

Benefits of being a Student Ambassador to the ambassadors themselves:

As a student ambassador, you will have the opportunity to increase your intercultural competence. This includes gaining knowledge and awareness of other cultures, as well as developing the skills needed to work with people from different backgrounds.

Engaging with different cultures can help you become a more rounded individual and better prepared for the increasingly globalized world. This can also help with your internal focus on self-growth and improvement.

As a SA, you also get involved in campus leadership opportunities to gain transferable skills for the workplace, such as networking with peers, faculty, staff and community members. You'll also make friends that will last a lifetime.
